Albums of the Year: 50-41

Tonight will be the first installment of my top albums of the year. I was going to do 40 albums, but when I was compressing a list of almost 150 I had to go to 50. These are of albums that I have heard. Therefore, there may be better stuff out there that I haven't listened to. I'm always open to suggestions on stuff to listen to, so send me band that should have made the list. Again this is one man's opinion and I hope you enjoy it.

50. The Wonder Years - Suburbia I've Given You All And Now I'm Nothing
This album is fairly new to me and it goes back to the old pop-punk days of my days in middle school. Where bands like New Found Glory and MXPX left off, The Wonder Years pick up. All in all it is a very fun album in the nostalgia aspect of it. Favorite song: Hoodie Weather

49. Cage The Elephant - Thank You Happy Birthday
Cage The Elephants sophomore effort is a bit of a turn from their debut. Instead of trying to be more radio friendly like their first hit "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked," they went more of a punk direction on this album. This is very apparent in the song "2024." All in all it is a very solid album with different songs for everyone. Favorite Song: Shake Me Down

48. White Lies - Rituals
Here is another sophomore album from another great band. The difference being they didn't stray too far from what made their debut album so successful; and also they are British. I really liked this album when it first came out and every now and then I will listen to it again. Some very catchy tunes on this one. Favorite Song: Bigger Than Us

47. Chimaira - Age of Hell
Chimaira's last album was a turn for the worse. After a great pairing of a self titled album followed by Resurrection, The Infection left a lot to be desired. This years release Age of Hell went back the way that they should be going in. A mix of growls and some clean vocals make this a hard hitting album all the way through. An album to listen to when you're feeling a little angry. Favorite Song: Time Is Running Out

46. Fucked Up - David Comes Life
Rock operas have been around for quite some time. Meat Loaf has made a living off of it and The Who even dabbled into it. Fucked Up have created a great rock opera here that follows the story of a character named David. It is a brilliant punk album that mixes melodic melodies with gritty vocals. Spin named it their top album of the year. I wouldn't go that far in my opinion, but it is still very good. Favorite Song: Queen of Hearts

45. Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto
Next to Nickleback (and every band that sounds like them) I think Coldplay is one of the easiest bands to hate. Let's face facts: these guys are POPULAR and popularity normally doesn't sit well with music connoisseurs. But consistently Coldplay has made very catchy music. Their last album was incredible and this one is a bit poppier in the sound, however it is still a great, fun and uplifting listen. Favorite Song: Charlie Brown

44. Kasabian - Velociraptor!
Speaking of fun music Kasabian always makes just that. Besides a few songs here and there that slow down things a bit they always seem to make a catchy song. Integrating rock with some dance themes they are able to create listenable and danceable music. A lot of their songs take a dramatic turn and catch you off guard (mostly for the better). This album isn't as good as their last album from 2009, but it is still a great listen. Favorite Song: Re-Wired

43. Protest The Hero - Scurrilous
What is there to say about Protest The Hero? These guys always create crazy music with obscure lyrics. There are also very relate-able lyrics like in the song Dunsel. This album is as energetic as ever in anything that they do. It's a great album and a great listen. Favorite Song: Dunsel

42. Civil Wars - Barton Hollow
Here comes the first indie/folk rock album on this list. There will be plenty more coming up in later editions. This album is a very down to earth home-felt listen. It's an album you can put on and sit on the back porch and tap your toes to. The band consists of two friends Joy Williams and John Paul White whose vocals compliment each other so well. This band will explode in the near future. As a matter of fact they were asked personally by Adele to accompany her on her latest tour. Favorite Song: Barton Hollow

41. The Head and The Heart - The Head and The Heart
This indie band follows the formula well. Folksy music and heartfelt lyrics. Another band that has the dual vocals every so often and it works great for them. This is another album that is new to my collection and will pile up the listens in the future.  Favorite Song: Ghosts
