Song of the Day 2.29.12

Hey it's leap day! What do you know. I guess that means instead of 365 song of the days I am giving you all 366. Oooooo so special. Okay moving on. Today I am giving you a band that I have been listening to over the last day or so nonstop. They came out a little while ago, and I cam back to them. The Republic of Wolves hail from Long Island, New York. Another really well known band comes from the same exact spot: Brand New. Ironically (or not surprisingly?) they sound a lot alike. They each have their subtle differences, and both are awesome in their own right. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do and pursue them further. Off their album Varuna here is The Republic of Wolves with The Attic

Song of the Day 2.28.12

I created this blog as a way to let people discover new music. So I have thrown out bands that not many people may know, but I have also thrown out some popular artists as well. Tonight I am going with the popular route. Mainly because I am listening to him right now, but also because his music is just that awesome. I am talking about Sir Elton John. I own three of his albums on vinyl, and let me tell you there is no other way to listen to his music. It is incredible coming out of my stereo. I am going to go with one of my favorites by him. It is one of his more popular songs, but it is way too good to pass up. Here is Elton John with Tiny Dancer

Song of the Day 2.27.12

I'm feeling a bit weird mood wise when it comes to music right now. A part of me doesn't really know what to listen to, and when something comes on I'm not sure if it's right. So to match my weirdness in mood I have chosen some weird music to listen to tonight. Off their album Trilogy I am listening to Emerson, Lake and Palmer and the track Trilogy

Song of the Day 2.26.12

Dr. Dog is an interesting band. Not just because of the name, but their music is intriguing. I had first discovered them with their album Fate. It was kind of folksy in the sound, and I wasn't really sure if I liked it when I heard it. I put it away and didn't really listen to it much. Then their album Shame Shame came out and I was a little more hooked. It had a better sound in my opinion and I really enjoyed it. But again it kind of lost some traction and went by the wayside. Just recently, they put out a new album called Be The Void. THIS is the album I have been waiting for from them. I absolutely love it and recommend it to any indie fan. Tonight I give you a taste off this album. Here is Dr. Dog with Lonesome.

Song of the Day 2.25.12

Almost forgot to write something tonight and give you all a song. Since that is the case I don't have a whole lot to say about it all. So as for a song, oh yeah here we go. I have been listening to Polar Bear Club a lot lately. I have been enjoying their sound and what they bring to the table. It's modern punk, a lot like a Rise Against, but with a little more less redundant sound. That isn't to knock Rise Against, but let's face it their sound hasn't been the greatest over their past couple records. So anyway here is Polar Bear Club with 3-4 Tango.

Song of the Day 2.24.12

I love old psychedelic rock from the 1960s. There was so much obscurity about it that made it awesome. Bands like Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones were starting off well. And then bands like The Beatles and The Grateful Dead were leading the way with the psychedelic movement. One band that I really like from this time are The Electric Prunes. They have a unique sound that to me if you listen closely (especially in tonight's song) has a little punk rock flair to it. Maybe I'm just hearing things. I don't know. But what I do know is that tonight I give you The Electric Prunes with I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night

Song of the Day 2 .23.12

I've been trying to dig deeper into the local music scene a lot more. San Diego has had some great bands come out of it, and there are a lot more that are still trying to make it big. I'm fairly new to the scene, so if there are any suggestions to someone I should check out let me know. One band that I will showcase tonight is from San Diego. They are starting to make it big, and I think in the next couple years they will be more better known. I saw them last year on the same bill that had Manchester Orchestra, The Dear Hunter, and White Denim. They are awesome live if you ever get the chance to see them. Here is Little Hurricane with Haunted Heart.

Song of the Day 2.22.12

Let's go to Australia for tonight's song. No not rock and roll with ACDC, I'm going country with Keith Urban. I have been listening to him quite a bit recently, just because his music is that good. I'm going with one of his more powerful songs that tells an interesting story. Just listen to the lyrics and feel the song. And when all is said and done enjoy the solo at the end too. He may be country, but he plays a mean guitar too. Here is Keith Urban with Stupid Boy

Song of the Day 2.21.12

WOOHOO! I am over 1000 page views total. Now for running this thing since December that probably isn't a whole lot, but hey when I get maybe 20 people to look at it maximum in one night it's good enough for me. Tonight I am giving you an awesome band. Everybody should know them, and if you don't then what is wrong with you. Off their album Doolittle I give you The Pixies with Monkey Gone To Heaven

Song of the Day 2.20.12

As today was the first day for pitchers and catchers to workout and get prepared for spring training I am in a huge baseball mood. Tonight I am going to give you all a little baseball mood music. Stemming from the voice of John Fogerty, the voice of Creedence Clearwater Revival. I think you probably already know where I am going with this. Here is John Fogerty with Centerfield.

Song of the Day 2.19.12

Consider this post for today to be my writers block. I don't know what to write or who to write about. the bands that I have listened to today I have already posted. So I really don't know who I should post. Time to just jump into it and post something random. How about a little blast from my childhood. Let's go with a little band called Everclear and their hit I Will Buy You A New Life

Song of the Day 2.18.12

I'm currently watching Hangover 2 right now. So with that in mind I am picking a song that is played during the movie. From the Piano Man himself Billy Joel I give you a song off his album Storm Front. This is the same album from 1989 that gave us We Didn't Start The Fire. It also has Leningrad and another of my Billy Joel favorites (as well as one of my favorite covers that Garth Brooks did) Shameless. But tonight I give you neither of those. Instead here is Billy Joel with The Downeaster "Alexa".

Song of the Day 2.17.12

I've been listening to a lot of different music lately. Right now for instance I have The Grateful Dead playing. Earlier today I hit a bit of nostalgia when I was in my car with POD's Satellite. One band that I have been listening to a bit of is White Denim. They are a jam band from Austin, Texas and they are awesome. I saw them live once along with The Dear Hunter and Manchester Orchestra. Their style of music fit right in with the other bands. I recently picked up one of their live albums, and today I picked up their newest album "D."It is an incredible listen, I really enjoy it and I hope you do to. So tonight I give you White Denim with Street Joy.

Song of the Day 2.16.12

Yesterday I had talked about two new bands that I have discovered that I will be seeing live in a couple months. All Get Out is one of the bands opening for La Dispute. The other band that I am excited about is Balance and Composure. Hailing from Doylestown, Pennsylvania (same as great band Circa Survive), here is Balance and Composure with Galena

Song of the Day 2.15.12

In April I am seeing the band La Dispute for the second time. They are a pretty good live band, so naturally I am excited. But I am even more excited now because I have been listening to the opening bands on Spotify. Tonight and tomorrow I will be giving you a song from the two bands that I have been listening to like crazy lately. Tonight I am going to start with All Get Out. The song is a great rocker that is pretty catchy in my opinion. Here is All Get Out with Lucky Bastard

Song of the Day 2.14.12

Seeing that it's Valentine's Day I guess I should post a love song. I don't really want to, but I guess I will. There are a lot of good ones out there. Let's go with some alt-country tonight for a love song that I have always enjoyed. Here are the Avett Brothers with January Wedding.

Song of the Day 2.13.12

Every week I look forward to what new music is coming out. Some weeks are definitely better than others. I have bought anywhere from zero to 10 CDs in one day in the form of new releases. This week is one of those slow weeks for me. There really are only two releases that I am looking forward to coming out tomorrow. The one that I am showcasing tonight comes from a band that has been around for a few years and that I found just a couple years ago. The band is called Shearwater. Their popular song is called Rook, but I'm going to give you all something from their last release that I absolutely love. Their new album comes out tomorrow, but off their last album The Golden Archipelago I give you Shearwater with Black Eyes.

Song of the Day 2.12.12

I won't write too much again tonight, just because I don't have a whole lot to say. I am excited for what is to come from tonight's band. They already have one album under their belt, but their newest song is already blowing up. This leads me to believe that their newest album which comes out in a couple weeks is going to explode as well. Here is Fun. with We Are Young

Song of the Day 2.11.12

Let's take a trip tonight across the pond to the United Kingdom. I'm speaking of Scotland to be exact. A lot of radio rock bands start to sound the same after a while. It takes a rare gift for a band to sound unique, but be accessible to the masses at the same time. Biffy Clyro is the perfect example of this. This band is proof to me that most American's have horrible taste in music. These guys are HUGE in their home country, but haven't quite exploded over here. Maybe it's for the better, but the deserve a lot more credit. A couple nights ago I talked about cover songs, well Biffy does an amazing cover of Rihanna's Umbrella. Seriously go check it out, it's awesome. So tonight I hope that I am introducing you to someone that you will fall in love with. And if you have already listened to them before, then I applaud you in your efforts to discover great music. Here is Biffy Clyro with Many of Horror.

Song of the Day 2.10.12

Let's go a little country tonight again. Dierks Bentley released a new album this week, and it's nothing short of awesome. Led by the single "Am I The Only One" and the title track "Home" it is a great all around listen. My favorite song off of it so far is a laid back song about just living life. Here is Dierks Bentley with Tip It On Back

Song of the Day 2.9.12

I love discovering new artists and bands. I love the classics, but I really like finding bands that take what the legendary artists have done and expand on that. Rarely does a band or artist make the big time and actually have talent. There is a lot of no talent out there, which bugs the hell out of me. I was browsing Spotify the other night and the number one song was by someone that I hadn't heard before so I thought hey let's check this out. I was pleasantly surprised. I was a little nervous because the number 2 song was Rack City by Tyga, and that shit is horrible. So tonight I give you the number 1 song on Spotify by Gotye entitled Someone That I Used To Know

Song of the Day 2.8.12

Cover songs go either way for me. Sometimes the cover is really good and on par with the original song. Other times (and most of the time for that matter) are really really bad. I think for an artist to do a cover song they need to embrace the spirit of the artist who made it original to begin with. At the same time they need to make it their own. It's not an easy task. For this reason a lot of bands ultimately fail at cover songs in my opinion. Rarely is there a cover song that surpasses the original, or can be deemed as great as the original. Just a couple that come to mind are Hurt which Johnny Cash had covered from the original Nine Inch Nails, and Turn The Page by Bob Seger covered by Metallica. One of the best covers of all time is one that in my opinion exceeds the original. I am talking of Hallelujah as sung by Jeff Buckley. The song was originally written and recorded by the legend Leonard Cohen. Tonight I will give you that song from the tragic singer that was taken from this world way too early. A common trend for amazing artists. Here is Jeff Buckley with Hallelujah.

Song of the Day 2.7.12

So one of the other singers that I saw the other night (along with Evan Weiss of Into It. Over It.) was Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids. For those that haven't heard their music, you are in for a real treat. I hope you enjoy this song as much as I did when I first heard it. I got the vinyl for their album today called There Are Rules. I spun it once and then had to go back to this song again because it is so good. Here is The Get Up Kids with Keith Case

Song of the Day 2.6.12

I have had a fairly shitty past week or so. This song tonight is a good summation of how I feel at times. Here is Dredg with Zebraskin

Sunday, February 5, 2012

Song of the Day 2.5.12

Last night I was introduced to an artist that I think everyone should listen to at least once. Evan Weiss is the front man (and only main artist) for the band Into It. Over It. I have been instantly hooked since I have listened to him sing. This song is incredible in my opinion. I'm not entirely sure what else to say about it other than you need to listen to it now. Here is Evan Weiss of Into It. Over It. with Midnight: Carroll Street

Song of the Day 2.4.12

Tonight I am seeing the Where's The Band concert. This consists of various singers from some bands doing an acoustic set of their songs. What I am excited to see is that Dustin Kensrue of Thrice will be playing tonight. He is only playing three shows on this tour and San Diego is lucky enough to be one of those shows. It should be a fun and interesting show to see. Here is Dustin Kensrue with I Knew You Before

Friday, February 3, 2012

Song of the Day 2.3.12

I don't feel like writing a whole lot today. Let's go a little country tonight for one of the most powerful songs that I have heard recently. I love this one. Here is Blake Shelton with God Gave Me You

Song of the Day 2.2.12

Kristofer Dommin, the lead singer of the band Dommin has declared today Dommin Day. To celebrate I am wearing my Dommin tshirt and was listening to nothing but Dommin in my car. That is a lot of "Dommin" in two sentences. To continue on with this day my song of the day will be by them. The task at hand is to find which song to post for you all. The biggest issue is they don't have a bad song at all. Their album "Love is Gone" came out in 2009 and it is one that I think any fan of music should have in their collection. Maybe I am biased because they are incredible, but whatever. Go get it. I'm demanding it. Here is Dommin with Tonight

Song of the Day 2.1.12

It's February now, and that means this is the 32nd post of this year on this blog. I feel like I have done a pretty decent job at keeping up with this and bringing a new song every day so far. I hope to continue this and bring you more good music as the year goes. I still want to start writing reviews, and I will, that is when I find the time to sit down and accurately share my opinion on this years albums. Tonight I am bringing you a song from The Airborne Toxic Event. I heard it come on my ipod the other day and relived some memories with it. It's a great track with one of my favorite lines in music, "It may be better to move on and to let life just carry on and I may be wrong. Still I'll try. Because it's better to love whether you win or lose or die. It's better to love and I will love you until I die." Beautiful. Here is The Airborne Toxic Event with The Graveyard Near The House
