Song of the Day 3.31.12

It's the final day of March, as we are about to turn the calendar over to April. This year is going pretty fast so far in my opinion. I have been crazy busy the past few days doing one thing or the other. But I love the fact that life is going so great. Tomorrow will be an amazing day for sure. So now that I have delved into my life a little bit let's get to the music. Last night I was able to go to my neighbors house and look through his vinyl collection. And he was nice enough to let me take a few home to add to my collection. He had some gems and I would have loved to take more, but what I did grab is amazing as well. Some essential listening is Led Zeppelin's album IV aka Zoso. The album is amazing from the opening song Black Dog all the way to the closer When The Levee Breaks. It also holds their (arguably) most famous song, Stairway To Heaven. All are great songs, but I am going to pick another one that sits on the A-Side of the album. Here is Led Zeppelin with The Battle of Evermore

Song of the Day 3.30.12

Good times were to be had by all tonight. Went out to the local casino to continue my sister's celebration. Drove up there with my sister and her two friends, and we were singing in the car and having a great time. One of the songs that came on is one that has been in my head quite a bit lately. I actually powered through it a few times on my drive through the desert. It also makes me think of a certain special someone :) So without further ado here is Luke Bryan with I Don't Want This Night To End

Song of the Day 3.29.12

This song holds special meaning to me right now. It's my sister's birthday today. I gave her an engraved bracelet since it is her 18th. I tried to find something nice to put on there and I came up with a line from tonight's song. The love between siblings is a strong one. No matter what happens in life you have each others back. The song tonight doesn't explicitly say that, but a lot of people have interpreted it as a sibling song to some degree. And I for one see that. So tonight here are The Beatles with In My Life

Song of the Day 3.28.12

I have had a long day and damn near forgot to post a song. I will talk more tomorrow about recent music purchases. But for tonight let's go with an instant classic in Jimmy Eat World's The Middle

Song of the Day 3.27.12

I had the chance today to listen to all the new music that I bought yesterday. I posted Civil Twilight yesterday, which of the 4 albums I think is the best one. The new one by The Used called Vulnerable is pretty good too. It grew on me as I listened to it. I think their first album and their last album are really good. But this one kind of falls in the middle as far as how good it is. It still has some good songs on it, just a little less memorable than past efforts. Tonight I will give you one of their songs off the album. Here is The Used with Hands and Faces

Song of the Day 3.26.12

A bunch of new music came out today. I love it when bands release stuff on the same day because it gets me super excited to hit the music store. Today I had releases from Meshuggah (which I haven't bought yet), The Mars Volta, The Used, Shinedown and Civil Twilight. So far I have only listened to the last two, but it is a pretty good start. The Civil Twilight album is awesome! Entitled Holy Weather it is filled with a bunch of great songs. After every one I was saying wow this is great. Tonight I will share a bit of that experience with you. Off the new album, which I highly recommend you get (it was $8.99 at Best Buy) here is Civil Twilight with It's Over

Song of the Day 3.25.12

Hey look at that, I actually got a post out on time today. Of course the only schedule I'm working on is my own, but I like to keep it steady. I had my ipod on shuffle this morning as I was driving to the sports complex. Now when you have an ipod that has 25,000 songs on it you never know what you're going to get. I went through some country, rock, a Busta Rhymes song and then landed on the band Vayden. I think it was perfect to be listening to them today because they are originally from Phoenix. When I first heard them I thought, hey these guys have a good radio rock sound. At the same time they are unique enough to stand out from the radio rock crowd too. So off their album Children of Our Mistakes here is Vayden with Anthem Of The Used

Song of the Day 3.24.12

I had a lot of fun with my uncle today, just drinking and being guys. His favorite singer is Johnny Cash. So in honor of that here is Johnny Cash with One Piece At A Time

Song of the Day 3.23.12

I forgot to post a song last night, so really it's the morning of the 24th right now. I was so busy yesterday that I completely forgot. So yesterday I was driving all day and I had a great road song to listen to. I'll keep this short and sweet, but here is Tom Petty with Runnin' Down A Dream

Song of the Day 3.22.12

So lately I have been listening to a lot of Maynard James Keenan projects. Whether it be Tool, A Perfect Circle, or Puscifer. But I have also been listening to side projects that have stemmed from those as well. Most notably is the guitar tech of Tool became the guitar player for A Perfect Circle. Then he became the guitarist and singer for Ashes Divide. His name is the one and only Billy Howerdel. The Ashes Divide album is awesome, it came out a few years ago, but it still holds up today. Every song has power and is a great listen. So tonight I give you Ashes Divide with Denial Waits

Song of the Day 3.21.12

Again I have no idea what song to pick. It happens people, because what I have been listening to lately I have already posted. Ummm, well let's do Tool tonight. I love this band, and Maynard James Keenan is a genius. Off their 10,000 Days album here is Tool with Jambi. (Didn't feel like writing a ton tonight either)

Song of the Day 3.20.12

According to the stats on this blog, this is the 100th post that I have done. Yes this includes the first intro post and my best of series at the end of the year. To celebrate I am going to just pick a random song. This is kind of because I don't have any idea of what to post. So to do this I am going to my itunes on shuffle and then pick the 100th song down. This could be interesting what will be posted. Here we go...Alright I lost count, but I last landed on Alkaline Trio with This Addiction

Song of the Day 3.19.12

The opener last night for Puscifer was the lovely Carina Round. She was pulling double duty last night as not only did she open and perform her own songs, but she also joined Maynard James Keenan during his Puscifer set. It was incredible and her voice is nothing short of stellar. She has an album coming out in May that will certainly be a good listen for everyone to get. So tonight I am giving you a taste of what is to come on that album. Here is Carina Round with The Last Time

Song of the Day 3.18.12

So I have been posting later in the day (by accident) the past couple of days. The first times I did it was because I was distracted by a new video game I got (nerd I know). Tonight was because I was at a birthday party all day then went to a concert tonight. So that is my excuse. I should be back to normal come tomorrow, unless I get distracted again. Tomorrow begins a new week and with it I have a midterm. Lucky fucking me. Tonight was a great escape from that all though. Maynard James Keenan is one of the most hard working men in the music business. And because of that I have a lot of respect for him. Starting out as the front man for Tool, then taking Tool guitar tech, Billy Howerdel and making A Perfect Circle, then on to his own little project called Puscifer. Not to mention the man owns his own wine company. I have seen Tool twice and tonight I saw Puscifer for the first time. It was an incredible experience and I enjoyed every minute of it. From the video clips to the stories to the "hippie drum circle" it was all awesome. So tonight I give you a little taste of what goes on in Maynard's mind when he embraces Puscifer. Here is Puscifer with Momma Sed

Song of the Day 3.17.12

It was St. Patrick's Day today, so I guess I'll go with something with a little Irish flair to it. I posted Flogging Molly the other day, so let's go with the band that is on my tshirt right now. Off their album Sing Loud, Sing Proud here is Dropkick Murphys with Rocky Road To Dublin

Song of the Day 3.16.12

Forgot to do this, so here is a late one for you all. I know it's after midnight and technically it's Saturday, but oh well. I want to post a song from when Avenged Sevenfold were good. Yeah there was a time they were believe it or not. Off their second (and best) album here is Avenged Sevenfold with Unholy Confessions

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Song of the Day 3.15.12

It's Throwback Thursday again. Tonight I am going with a good one that I think a lot of people will enjoy. After The Beatles broke up all the members went on to do their own projects. One of the projects was Paul McCartney and Wings. Arguably their best album was Band On The Run. I could pick the title song for tonight, or even the song Jet. But I am going with another one that I absolutely love. Here is Paul McCartney and Wings with Let Me Roll It

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Song of the Day 3.14.12

So tonight is the season premier of South Park. 16 seasons this show has been on the air. The only longer running animated show is The Simpsons, and that is pretty good company. So while I patiently await for the new season to start I have a song for you all to enjoy. I was going to go with something interesting, but I can wait for that. In honor of the new South Park I am going to go with something from the show. Yeah let's go with Eric Cartman singing Poker Face

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

Song of the Day 3.13.12

Normally Tuesdays for me mean going to a music store and buying whatever has come out that day. Today was a little different because the album I was going to get wasn't at the store that it was supposed to be at. Oh well. I didn't leave empty handed. The 90s band Archers of Loaf re-released their albums today. One of them is their sophomore album Vee Vee. So I am going with them tonight. Here is Archers of Loaf with Harnessed In Slums

Monday, March 12, 2012

Song of the Day 3.12.12

Instrumental post rock is a great genre. With bands like Explosions In The Sky, God Is An Astronaut and Mogwai leading the way what's not to like? The genre is peaceful as well as energetic. It's a great experience every time you listen. Tonight I am giving you a band that is similar in nature to these bands. Here is Beware of Safety with Kaura

Song of the Day 3.11.12

It's that time of year again where the clock suddenly jumps ahead an hour. This meant losing an hour of sleep last night, and it also means later days, and a bit more sunlight. I know down here the sun didn't fully set till after 7. Tonight I am going to give you all one of my favorite songs, that asks a pertinent question to this time of the year. From the recently hiatused band Thursday here is How Long Is The Night?

Song of the Day 3.10.12

Time for a good song. One of my favorite bands, and a very very good live band to boot, have released a new song for us all. Their new album comes out in June, which means a wee bit of waiting to hear the rest of it. I am talking about The Temper Trap. I'm sure you have all at least heard Sweet Disposition, it infected the world for a while a year or two ago. It's a great song though, so I was okay with it. But they do have better songs including the one tonight. What gets me really excited about new songs and new albums is the potential for a new tour. And we all know how awesome live experiences are and how much I love going to concerts. So tonight I give you The Temper Trap with Rabbit Hole

Song of the Day 3.9.12

Whenever I go to a live show I usually like to show up fairly early. Usually right around the time the doors open. The reason for this is because even though I may be there to just see the headliner, I really like to listen to opening bands. Usually I find a hidden gem that I had no idea existed. This was the case last Sunday when I saw Children of Nova open for Junius and O'Brother. Really really good band there. Tuesday I saw Flogging Molly, and while the second band sucked, the first group was really good. That first group is Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss. What sparked me at first was that they were the only members on the stage. Zander had the guitar and Sean had the mic (Zander sang too). The other thing that sparked me was their attire and then Sean's voice. Think a cleaner less raspy Tom Waits. I was thoroughly impressed. Then after some research I found out that Zander Schloss is the bass player for legendary punk band The Circle Jerks. So a lot of musical experience there. So tonight I am giving you all Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss with Retablo

Song of the Day 3.8.12

Okay time to type. Words word words. The problem is I don't really know what or who to write about. The problem is I try to give something new and fresh each day that people haven't heard, or haven't heard in a while. And since this is the first time I've done this blog like this I keep coming up with new thoughts on what to do. Like tonight for instance, I think I am going with an older song. That got me thinking, hey I should do like a Throwback Thursday thing. Also I could feature local bands on the weekend and call it San Diego Saturday (or Sunday). I just might have to start this. Let's do Throwback Thursday tonight and go with something from Whitesnake. I think you know which song I am going to go with and it's awesome! Here is Whitesnake with Here I Go Again.

Song of the Day 3.7.12

Not a whole lot to say today. Other than the fact that I had another shitty day. But it's to be expected at 22 and trying to figure out what to do with your life. And on top of that knowing you need to get through your last semester of college, but are struggling to do so. But at the end of the day I just take a deep breath and get over it. And bottle some anger in until I explode later, but that's besides the point. I'm okay though, just getting by. In that same theme here are The Rescues tonight with We're OK

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Song of the Day 3.6.12

I'm posting a little bit early today, but that's because I am about to head downtown to fuck shit up! Nah, not really, but I am heading downtown to head to a show. Tonight is Flogging Molly. It shall be fun, it shall be wild, and ultimately I will have no sense of hearing by the end of tonight. This will be my first time seeing them live, but I know they put on a pretty good show so I am excited. So here we go tonight with Flogging Molly and The Devils Dance Floor

Monday, March 5, 2012

Song of the Day 3.5.12

So one of the bands that I saw play last night is a local outfit called Children of Nova. And they are pretty damn good, let me tell you. The song tonight is from their 2009 EP, but they do have a new album coming out on the 13th. I think these guys have a lot of potential to become something. The atmosphere last night was great, and I hope these guys can bring some atmosphere to you. Here is Children of Nova with The Complexity of Light

Sunday, March 4, 2012

Song of the Day 3.4.12

Tonight I am seeing one of the greatest live bands that I have ever seen. That's saying something when I have been to over 50 concerts. I first saw O'Brother last year when they opened for Thrice. I had no idea who they were when I walked in. I walked out a new fan with a t-shirt. I can't wait for this night to get started. Junius and Children of Nova will be playing with them as well. Here is O'Brother with Lay Down

Song of the Day 3.3.12

Inspiration. It's a word that a lot of people use ALL the time. Obviously people are inspired to do things from all over the place. It's always a curious thing though. You never know who is going to inspire you or who you may inspire. For example, going into college I wanted to pursue teaching. But my senior year I took physics with the best teacher ever and I loved it. Yeah I'm a nerd. Now you would think this would inspire me to become the best teacher ever. Instead it inspired me to pursue physics and its applications. Thus I am now about two and a half months from graduating with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. The next question is where will my inspiration come from in the next chapter of my life? Hell it could come from anywhere. According to my beloved friend Brianna's blog Vitamin Bee, I have inspired her to start her own blog. Now for this I am honored. Now what the hell does this have to do with tonight's song? I don't really know, but I hope that my speech was...well...inspirational (see what I did there?) How about we go with a little M83 tonight. I've been listening to this song a bit lately and it's great. Simple simple lyrics, but they have deep deep meaning. (Double speak creates emphasis...emphasis). "There is no end, There is no goodbye, Disappear with the night." How beautiful is that? Yeah, let it sink in a bit and tell me how it feels. Is it...inspiring? See I was able to make a connection. This is fun. Off their newest album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming here is M83 with Wait.

Song of the Day 3.2.12

It's amazing how everyday I write for one blog, and contribute to another, and yet I still have no idea what the date is every day. It's a sad reality, but very true. I'm a wee bit bummed out right now because I purchased a record today that is completely warped. I'm hoping to fix it soon, but we will see how that goes. Knowing my luck I will heat it beyond repair. Then again if I do it right, then no harm no foul. Stay positive I guess. That record is Local Natives' Gorilla Manor, which is a very good album by the way. I have listened to it on Spotify and the record came with a free download code. So at least I can listen to it. But I would really really like to listen to it on my fucking stereo! Anyways, in honor of that album here are Local Natives with Who Knows Who Cares

Song of the Day 3.1.12

Holy shit in a hand basket Batman it's March already. Thank god too (or whatever deity you believe in). I have so much to look forward to in the coming months, that I just can't wait to get it all started. Anyways, music, yes that glorious art; that is why we are here. The past couple days have been really nice. You never know who is going to pop up in you life and from where. Everything happens by chance and also, I believe, for a reason. The other day I met the beautiful and splendid Brianna Barnes, who has opened my eyes to various artists that I did not know existed. And let me tell you that I have loved every suggestion this girl has given me. It's just awesome on so many levels. Tonight I am giving you one of these said suggestions. Because I have been diggin it quite a bit ever since I heard it. It has a great catchy beat and will get your toes a tappin and your head a bobbin. Here is Of Monsters and Men with Little Talks
